Kohunlich Mayan Ruins Tour
Join us for a guided visit to the heart of Kohunlich, home of the enigmatic stucco masks representing “Kinich Ahau” (Sun God for the ancient Maya) that are among the best preserved in the whole Maya world.
Kohunlich’s temples and palaces are in a privileged location surrounded by exuberant jungle characterized by exotic “Cohune” palms from where the site got its name. Expect an adventure in a quiet atmosphere that makes it perfect to climb the acropolis, explore the multi-room palaces, walk through the ceremonial plazas and the ball-court, and admire the intricate decoration of the temple of the masks.
Inclusions: Round transportation in air conditioned vehicle, travel insurance, English speaking guide, entrance fees to Kohunlich Ruins, guided tour, bottled water and box lunch (turkey sandwich, fruit, juice or soda, bag of chips or granola bar).
This tour includes the services of a local guide who will unveil the secrets of Kohunlich and fill your day with interesting facts about the great Maya civilization and today’s local culture.
Duration: 6 hours.
Departure Times (cruise ship guests): Daily, one hour after ship’s arrival time.
Departure Location: The Native Choice Office, four blocks from the Costa Maya Port. Email confirmation will include easy to follow directions and a map.
Deposits: A deposit of $15.00USD per person is required at booking to confirm spaces for this tour. Deposits are fully refundable if for any reason cruise ship doesn’t call port at all in Costa Maya.
Cancellation Policy: 48 hours before the tour.
Restrictions: Your cruise ship must stay in port for at least 8 (eight) hours to participate in this tour.
This tour is better appreciated by children ages 6 years old and older.

The ride from Costa Maya to Kohunlich Ruins takes two hours, with a rest stop at Bacalar town for bathrooms, gas and for our guests to stretch legs.
The road is in perfect conditions most of the way, then we switch to a narrow rural road for the last 10 minutes before reaching the ruins.
Visitors are allowed to climb a few steps of the temple of the masks and the acropolis at Kohunlich.
This tour includes walking on uneven grounds and it isn’t suitable for people with difficulties to walk.
There’s a copyright fee of $5.00USD for the use of video cameras at Kohunlich, this fee isn’t included in the tour price, it’s paid at the entrance of the site and applies only for video cameras. There’s no fee for the use of film or digital photo cameras even if they can take video.
Kohunlich is in the middle of the jungle and currently there aren’t shops. Expect to find only clean bathrooms and a ticket center at the service area of the site.
